When Nick finally decides the time is right for him to propose to Ki, he decides that he needs to meet her parents first. Since both come from very traditional backgrounds, he decides he must appeal to their cultural heritages. Ki's mother hails from Hong Kong and is fluent in Cantonese with a decent command of English. Ki's father originally came from Tokyo and is apparently retired. They each came to the United States years ago to attend college, during which time they broke from their more traditional backgrounds and embraced Western culture. Eventually they met, fell in love and got married. After deciding to remain in the States, they had their children, Ki and Yoshi.
Ki's mother tends to be warm and friendly, and is well-known for her hospitality. She shows her more traditional roots by remaining at home and deferring to her husband on most matters. When she is scorned, however, she can have a fierce temper and is more than willing to stand up to anyone with whom she disagrees. Mr. Oshiro, however, is a muddle of contradictions. Since his children were born, he has turned more and more toward his traditional cultural values, almost to the point of racism and sexism. His reactions to Nick indicate that he has a deep-rooted intolerance of Caucasians seeking to date his daughter, which is perhaps a result of a very soured experience with one of Ki's old boyfriends. While Nick and Ki were eventually able to win over her father and get his blessing on their engagement, it is uncertain how Nick and Mr. Oshiro's relationship will eventually progress.

Other information
It was revealed that Sam, Ki's ex-boyfriend, helped Mr. Oshiro get a managerial job at his father's company. Soon after Sam and Ki's breakup, however, Mr. Oshiro was terminated from that line of employment. Whether or not it was out of revenge was never proven.
Mr. Oshiro was struck by a car driven by Chuck, critically injuring him, during Surreptitious Machinations, causing a jobless Ki to go home. It was the final part of Trudy's plot to split up the GPF Software crew and isolate Nick for her own nefarious purposes. It is believed that Trudy gave Chuck orders to do further damage to Mr. Oshiro if Ki tried to leave. Although he recovered, he is said to have briefly had a mortality obsession afterward. It did lead to Ki meeting Nick's parents during Christmas in 2003, however.
Even though he has accepted Nick as his future son-in-law, Mr. Oshiro still refers to Nick as gaijin, which is a Japanese derrogative for "outsider".
