Sam

First Appearance: Sam (September 23, 2005--flashback)

Sam is one of Ki's old boyfriends, and the primary reason why Mr. Oshiro disapproves of his daughter dating Caucasian men. In college, Sam (whose last name is unknown) was the star running back on the football team; his combination of good looks and intelligence immediately attracted Ki, and they started dating--even though her friend Fooker disapproved. As their relationship progressed, certain problems began to emerge. Sam had a tendency to express his love for Ki by buying her expensive things, and he began trying to pressure her into having a more physical relationship, but overall Ki was happy because she was in love--and when Sam proposed, she accepted.

When Sam met Ki's parents over Thanksgiving, it went fairly well--Mrs. Oshiro was accepting of their relationship, and Mr. Oshiro, though not characteristically warm, was certainly tolerant of his daughter's fiancé. Pleased with their acceptance, Sam pulled some strings with his well-to-do father and got Mr. Oshiro a manager's job at one of his dad's manufacturing plants.

Meeting Sam's parents at Christmas, however, was another matter. Sam's dad was friendly, but not entirely comfortable around strong women; his mother was icy and superior with Ki, and was obviously trying to sway Sam into breaking the engagement. The visit was strained and uncomfortable for both Sam and Ki.

After the visit to Sam's parents, Sam and Ki's relationship became increasingly awkward. Ki was uncomfortable with the way Sam and his friends mistreated Fooker, and with the way Sam was becoming more controlling--even to the point where he forbade Ki to cut her hair because he liked it long. Rumors of unknown origin began circulating around the football team that Sam "wasn't getting any" from his girlfriend, and that Sandra, a cheerleader, was "servicing" Sam to make up for it. When Ki confronted Sam with these rumors, he swore he hadn't slept with the cheerleader; Ki wasn't sure she believed him, but she felt like a heel for even asking.

Feeling that she would do anything to make Sam happy, Ki decided she would offer her body to Sam before the wedding. When he accepted, though, something in Ki's mind began to scream that it wasn't right, and she explained to Sam that she couldn't go through with it. Frustrated and furious, Sam physically attacked her, and it was only due to a stroke of luck that Ki escaped. Instinctively she ran to Fooker, whose early U.G.A. training came in handy against the enraged Sam.

Later Sam tried to apologize, but it was too late; Ki returned his ring and they officially broke up. Nasty rumors about Ki began to circulate around the school, but Ki didn't care. Mr. Oshiro was furious about what Sam had almost done to his daughter. A short time later, he was fired from his managerial position at one of Sam's father's plants, for reasons which were almost certainly trumped up. Sadly, Nick received the brunt of Oshiro-san's bitterness about the experience.

We know that Sam ended up marrying Sandra the cheerleader, and later getting divorced. We also know he still plays professional football. Other than that, though, his current whereabouts are sketchy.
