Dr. Akhilesh Sehgal

From the Official Cast Page

First Appearance: Homecoming (July 25, 2004)

A native of India, Dr. Sehgal came to the United States to study medicine, but remained in America after his family disowned him for becoming a Christian. Sehgal works primarily at the emergency room of a local hospital, and he constantly struggles with the weight of his responsibilities, ever mindful of the balance between life and death. Extremely dedicated and outgoing, he has also been known to use his own personal finances and resources to help those in need... which just happens to include a mysterious stranger currently under his care. He also spent several days nursing a badly injured Trudy back to health during a critical moment in her life.

Additional Information

Dr. Akhilesh Sehgal made his first appearance in GPF on Sunday, July 25, 2004. He is originaly from India, and his name means "Immortal Indestructible". Dr. Sehgal is a self-confessed outcast and workaholic. He is evidently a brilliant physician judging by the novel and innovative treatment he designed for a mystery patient close to death whose DNA was being re-written by advanced nanoprobes. As of this writing the identity of the mystery patient has not been revealed, but a good guess may be that it's Trish, who was shot by her evil double in the strip on Thursday, November 20, 2003.

Dr. Sehgal converted to Christianity sometime after moving to America. There is no mention as to what religion he practiced before, possibly Hinduism or Islam. What is evident is that his parents were devout enough in the religion to disown him when he converted. No reason is given for his conversion, but it may have something to do with his deceased sister. The death of a close relative is a plausible instigator for a crisis of faith and subsequent change of religion. We do not know whether his sister had also converted to Christianity.

Dr. Sehgal has used the money he saved up for his sisters operation to fund the treatments on his mystery patient. He is compassionate and trusting almost to a fault. One could say that he really does embody the virtues preached by the messiah of his adopted religion.

He made his second appearance on Saturday, February 5, 2005 (during the "Providence" segment) when he rescued a sick, battered, and unconscious Trudy from the streets in a snow storm. During her stay with him, we learn a few more small nuggets of information: He responds to the nicknames "Aki", "Ali", or "Al". He often dresses up as a clown to entertain sick children. He does not own a Television, and he enjoys board games.

After Trudy confessed her entire story to him, Dr. Sehgal became convinced of her need for greater spiritual fulfillment. Before she left his care, he made a deal with her that he would not call the cops if she took his copy of the Bible with her in the hopes that she would read it. His hopes may not have been in vain, as Trudy finally showed some inclination to flip through it as the segment came to a close.

No mention is made as to what city Dr. Sehgal lives in, but if his mystery patient is, indeed, Trish, then chances are that he lives in the same city as the rest of the GPF gang. But if that's the case then it would be very strange for somebody on the run like Trudy to be that close to home. Perhaps that's evidence that the mystery patient is not Trish after all. Only time will tell.
